Itinerary

Nonomiya Shrine

Nonomiya Shrine was originally built as a sacred house for Saio or the Ise Shrine Priestess (selected from among the princesses and other imperial women as the emperor’s deputy), as a venue to prepare herself through purification.

The carefully chosen site is located in Sagano, a serene and purified place to the northwest of Kyoto City. The sanctuary, which is bordered by the Black Torii Gate (shrine entrance gate made of unbarked timber) and brushwood fences, is gracefully depicted in the Chapter of Sacred Tree, the Tale of Genji.

Bamboo grove

The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is one of Kyoto’s top sights and for good reason: standing amid these soaring stalks of bamboo is like being in another world.

Located about 7km west of downtown Kyoto, Arashiyama is one of Kyoto’s most popular sightseeing districts. The heart of the district is the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, a mesmerizing grove of thousands of tall bamboo plants. A paved walkway runs through the middle of both sections, forming the famous “Bamboo Alley,” one of Kyoto’s most photographed sights.

Okouchi-Sanso Garden

Okochi-Sanso Villa is one of the top sights in Kyoto.

Formerly the estate of the famed film actor Okochi Denjiro (1898-1962), this sublime villa and surrounding gardens are now open to the public. Many people balk at the Y1,000 admission fee, but we think it’s worth shelling out to see this place, especially since the admission fee includes a nice Japanese sweet and a cup of hot matcha tea (hold onto your ticket in order to get these in the teahouse at the conclusion of the tour). The main house here is one of the finest examples of traditional Japanese residential architecture anywhere and the teahouse is a wabi-sabi gem.

Tenryuji Temple

Tenryu-ji is located in Arashiyama, a scenic area at the foot of the mountains on the western outskirts of Kyoto.

The Arashiyama area’s historical connections with Zen are deep. In the ninth century Empress Tachibana no Kachiko (786-850) founded the temple Danrin-ji, Japan’s first Zen temple, on the present site of Tenryu-ji. After the temple fell into disrepair the site was used by the emperors Go-Saga (1220-1272) and Kameyama (1249-1305) as a detached palace. Emperor Go-Daigo (1288-1339) also resided here.

Togetsukyo Bridge

The Togetsukyo Bridge is Arashiyama’s well known, central landmark. Many small shops, restaurants and other attractions are found nearby, including Tenryuji Temple, Arashiyama’s famous bamboo groves and pleasure boats that are available for rent on the river.
